It’s that time of year again—life is renewing itself everywhere we look. One of the places where that is evident is at Evergreen Lake, our community’s crown jewel.

Year after year, visitation to the lake increases. And year after year, wildlife returns to the lake to nest and to give birth. Most prominent among the local fauna are the elk and deer. The spring calving season, as well as the fall rut, are times of the year where human/dog/wildlife encounters increase and sometimes become dangerous.

For this reason, Evergreen Audubon teams up with Denver Mountain Parks and Wild Aware in a volunteer project called Wildlife Watch. Our mission is to foster wildlife awareness, safety, and appreciation in our mountain community. Our volunteers keep watch at the lake especially for elk, promoting safe viewing by human visitors. In the past, 90% of conflicts with elk were initiated by human behavior. Our goal is to reduce unsafe encounters and to educate and inspire awareness around wildlife.

We need help! If you would like to volunteer for this seasonal volunteer opportunity, please reach out to Emma Vasicek or Linda Engelhart. Even if you missed the spring training session, we can connect you with seasoned volunteers who will introduce you to the job and get you up to speed.
