Presentation Details

Now that spring has finally arrived in our Evergreen world, it’s tempting to head over to the garden center to pick out our favorite flowers and plants without thinking about the fact that many of them, as pretty as they are, don’t benefit the surrounding insects, birds, and other pollinator species that our garden ecosystems depend on.  Native plants do!

Barbara Gorges, former president of the Cheyenne-High Plains Audubon Society and certified Master Gardener will be talking to us about creating a bird-friendly yard and then draft your planting plan so that you will be ready to shop at Evergreen Audubon’s Native Plant Sale on Saturday, June 3rd.

Barb’s presentation will discuss the requirements for becoming a Habitat Hero, an Audubon program that provides people, businesses, and cities with the resources to create bird habitats in their own communities. Barb will provide a selection of native plant descriptions that can be used in our region, a selection of Habitat Hero gardens in Cheyenne, and a quick review of how to start a HH garden. Barbara welcomes comments and suggestions from Evergreen Audubon gardeners for native plants that are particularly suitable to our Bear Creek watershed.

Native Plant Sale: Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (or while supplies last). Proceeds benefit Evergreen Nature Center. The plant sale will be in the parking lot in front of the NEW Evergreen Nature Center, at the Evergreen Church of the Transfiguration, 27640 CO-74, Evergreen.

Demonstration Garden: Saturday, June 3, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. CSU Extension will host their 2023 Open Gardens Day at Hiwan Homestead on Meadow Drive.

(Note, there is a marathon running through Evergreen the same day as the plant sale, check out the Plant Sale event page to learn about possible road closures and detours)
