The 25th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a global four-day event, being held this year from Friday, February 18, through Monday, February 21, 2022. You are encouraged to count birds at your feeders (or at any other location of your choice) for as little as fifteen minutes during this four-day period. Results are then reported online at birdcount.org where you can explore real-time maps and charts that show what others are reporting during and after the count. To get an idea of what to expect to see in your area during the GBBC go to – https://ebird.org/explore.
Each checklist submitted during the GBBC helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology learn more about how birds are doing around the world, and how to protect them. Last year, almost 270,000 participants from 253 countries submitted their bird observations online, creating one of the largest instantaneous snapshots of global bird populations ever recorded – over 20 million birds representing 6572 species.
