From the President

I am so excited about our new location for the Evergreen Nature Center and grateful for all the volunteers who are helping spruce the place up. We will have an Open House special event on Saturday, September 9th to celebrate our new home. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us at the event! Melissa has been posting great photos on our progress on Facebook but you can also check out a gallery of photos from the demo day. A special thanks to all those who have helped so far; there’s still lots to do to get ready to open — I will send an email soon with more opportunities to contribute to the preparation.

In addition to getting the Nature Center ready for our grand reopening, many of you volunteered during the Triple ByPass. I really appreciate all your volunteer hours, they will be reflected in our fall donation from Team Evergreen. Here are a few pics from the event where we helped make sure bikes, people and cars didn’t collide — our volunteers are in bright green vests.

Speaking of volunteering, once we re-open the Nature Center, we’ll need visitor assistants to show off the new space, answer questions about the exhibits and promote Evergreen Audubon programming. It’s the perfect way to meet new people and learn about our mountain flora and fauna. Unlike volunteering at the old Nature Center, you won’t have to worry about the crazy parking lot or using port-o-potties! Contact Emma Vasicek if you are interested in volunteering.

I hope you all are getting out and doing lots of birding this year. Remember, we have our 2023 Birding Challenge going on until the end of the year. That means you still have 5 months to meet the challenge either in the Bear Creek Watershed (111 species), Jefferson County (130 species), Clear Creek County (75 species), Gilpin County (64 species), Park County (102 species), or the State of Colorado (171 species). Of course, you can really push yourself by meeting the challenge in more than one area. Steve and I have already hit our Watershed number and are 1 away in JeffCo and 15 away in the state! It’s been a great adventure for us and a good opportunity to explore more birding sites, plus you get a cool hat as modeled by some of last year’s winners.

Happy Birding!
Kathy
