Presentation Details

As fall progresses, we witness one of our Evergreen world’s most magnificent spectacles: the Fall elk rut. Unfortunately, this timeless cycle pays little attention to the roads and buildings we construct, with the result being the all too common sight of injured or dead animals. The fatal interaction of wildlife with human constructs isn’t limited to elk; deer, bears, mountain lions, and many other smaller mammals suffer as well. There should be better alternatives to this senseless wildlife loss.

Fortunately, there is, and at our Evergreen Audubon October Chapter Meeting, you will gain keen insights into the problems, subtleties, and solutions to wildlife-infrastructure conflicts.

Around the world, wildlife crossings are being built to help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions while allowing animals to safely cross under or over a roadway to access the habitat and resources they need to survive. In her presentation, our speaker, Julia Kintsch, Principal & Senior Ecologist, for ECO-resolutions, will address how well crossing structure work in reducing collisions and providing safe passages for wildlife, review alternative mitigation strategies that may be considered where wildlife crossings aren’t feasible, and discuss what Colorado is doing to create safer roads for wildlife and motorists.
