NOTE: This event has been rescheduled for one week later on January 31 due to the winter weather predicted for the original date of January 24.

After a brief hiatus, Evergreen Audubon is restarting our weekend (and occasional weekday) bird walks! For our (re)inaugural bird walk, all ages and abilities are welcome to join Ed Furlong and your fellow Evergreen Audubon members as we bird a northern section of the South Platte/Denver corridor on January 24, 2026 from 7:30 am to 1 pm. The walk starts at Steele Park, at approximately East 78th avenue, and will work our way south (upstream) along the Platte. This section of the river, downstream of the Denver Metro treatment plant, is open throughout the winter and as a result hosts thousands of waterfowl, including Northern Shovelers, Pintails, Common and Barrows Goldeneyes, Hooded Mergansers, Canada and Cackling Geese, and many other species.  Raptors are usually seen as well, including Bald Eagles, Red-Tailed Hawks, and Kestrels.  Song Sparrows and even Yellow-Rumped Warblers have been spotted here in the middle of winter.  We also will drive to the section of the S. Platte upstream of the treatment plant and walk downstream, where a hedge of Black-Crowned Night Herons has resided near the plant; other waterfowl are also present. This bird walk provides a wonderful winter birding experience and you are invited to join us!

Bring water, a snack, and dress for the occasion.  We will meet at the Bergen Park-and-Ride at 7:15 AM.  Or you can meet us at Steele Park around 8:00.  Once I have a list of registrants, I’ll contact you with additional details.

These walks are for Evergreen Audubon members and their guests. Non-members won’t be turned away but will be encouraged to join Evergreen Audubon.  You must register here to attend this event.  If you are registering for more than one person, please enter each person separately.  This event is filled when we have 12 registrants.  If you attempt to register and the event is full, please email me at chapterprograms@evergreenaudubon.org, and I will put you on my waitlist (cancellations do occur with some regularity).

Thanks!

Ed Furlong
