Expired Bird Walk to South Platte Reservoir and the South Platte Downstream of Chatfield Reservoir

There are no upcoming dates for this event.

All ages and abilities are welcome to join Ed Furlong and your fellow Evergreen Audubon members as we bird South Platte Reservoir and the South Platte in South Platte Park,  downstream of Chatfield Reservoir.  The walk is on February 21, 2026 from 7:30 am to 1 pm.

February is a challenging time to plan bird walks along the Front Range. We are still in winter’s grip, but can have some great birding along riparian corridors and at reservoirsthat have open water. South Platte Reservoir and the South Platte Park, downstream of Chatfield Reservoir are two such locations in close proximity, where partially ice-free water is often  present  in February. The effect of this partial ice-cover is to  concentrate waterfowl, providing better opportunities for study. Also, the mixed terrestrial and riparian habitats in South Platte Park can provide opportunities for raptors and a variety of overwintering song birds.

The walk will begin at the South Platte Park parking lot at the Southeast corner of South Platte Reservoir. After scanning the reservoir for open-water sites and waterfowl, we will return to the parking lot, grab snacks or other gear and walk into South Platte Park and bird any open water in the floodplain ponds and along the South Platte and the adjacent grasslands and riparian woodlands.

Bring water, a snack, and dress for the occasion. We will meet at the Bergen Park-and-Ride at 7:20 AM.  Or you can meet us at the South Platte Park parking lot around 8:00 AM.  Once I have a list of registrants, I’ll contact you with additional details.

Please note that this walk may be postponed or the location changed if weather or other conditions change as the date of the bird walk approaches. Colorado weather can be unpredictable and the safety and enjoyment of our participants are priorities. Should circumstances require a date or location change, you will be notified ahead of the event by the email and/or mobile phone numbers your provide upon registration.

These walks are for Evergreen Audubon members and their guests. Non-members won’t be turned away but will be encouraged to join Evergreen Audubon. You must register here to attend this event. If you are registering for more than one person, please enter each person separately. This event is filled when we have 12 registrants. If you attempt to register and the event is full, add yourself to the wait list. If any spots open prior to the day of the walk, they will be filled from the wait list in order of registration date.

Thanks!
Ed Furlong
