Spring is fully upon our Evergreen World, leaning hard into Summer. Wildflowers are about, but there’s still time to add to the abundance of color around your home, aid our local pollinators and birds, and enjoy great time outdoors planting and understanding the the depth and complexity of our montane ecosystems. You may have already made purchases at Evergreen Audubon’s Annual Native Plant sale, and are wondering about the best conditions to plant these natives.

If so, one of the best ways to get started is to attend our June Evergreen Audubon Chapter Meeting when Prof. Maggie Gaddis, Executive Director of the Colorado Native Plant Society, presents “Native plants for high-altitude gardens”. The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, June, 4, 2024 at Evergreen Church of the Transfiguration, and virtually via Zoom. Please note the new day and time for our Chapter Meetings!

Doors open at 6:00 pm, and you will want to arrive early to get yourself a great seat for this presentation, to catch up with your fellow Audubon Chapter members, and to learn about all the great events and opportunities you can participate in with Evergreen Audubon.

In this talk, Maggie will provide a brief introduction to the Colorado Native Plant Society.

She will cover the basic ecology of mountain landscapes and the challenges associated with gardening at altitude. She will then take us on a native species for mountain gardens photo tour, following the selections presented in the publication entitled “Low Water Native Plants for Colorado Gardens: Mountains 7,500′ and Above”. She also will give everyone a copy of this pamphlet.

This will be an outstanding opportunity for everyone to jumpstart, or add to, their knowledge of native plant gardening.  And, if somehow you missed the Evergreen Audubon Native Plant Sale, or are inspired to add even more native plants to your landscape, fear not! The Denver Chapter of the Colorado Native Plant Society Native Plant Sale is holding its annual Garden Tour and Plant Sale on June 8 & 9, so you will have ample opportunity to put the knowledge you gain at our Chapter Meeting to use in your own home place! This is an opportunity you won’t want to miss!

About the Speaker

Dr. Maggie Gaddis is the Executive Director of the Colorado Native Plant Society (CoNPS). Maggie, CoNPS members, and her students investigate native plant revegetation and propagation from the wildlands to the greenhouse. You can find Maggie on a trail with

CoNPS members, or in her garden working the lifelong restoration project that is home gardening. Maggie has taught the Sustainable High Altitude Gardening Education course since 2010 where she first taught it in Leadville, the highest incorporated town in the U.S. (10,158′). Since those days, she has taught the course in Buena Vista (8,000′), Salida (7,000′), and now Colorado Springs (6,000′). Maggie can’t wait to hear your gardening stories so she can add them to her repertoire of high altitude gardening folklore.
