The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a global four-day event, being held this year from Friday, February 14, through Monday, February 17, 2025. You are encouraged to count birds at your feeders (or at any other location of your choice) for as little as fifteen minutes during this four-day period. Results are then reported online where you can explore real-time maps and charts that show what others are reporting during and after the count. To learn more about how to participate and to register for one of two informational events being offered in early February go to birdcount.org.
Each checklist submitted during the GBBC helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology learn more about how birds are doing around the world, and how to protect them. Last year, over 642,000 participants from 210 countries submitted their bird observations online, creating one of the largest instantaneous snapshots of global bird populations ever recorded – over 20 million birds representing 7,920 species.
