From the President – Nature Center News

We recently learned from Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Denver Mountain Parks (DMP) that they plan to use the entire historic warming hut this summer for their own outdoor education programming. We are hoping we can change DPR’s mind and have proposed they partner with us for their programming and let us continue to install our seasonal nature center. We are still waiting to hear back from them and will keep you informed as news unfolds.

Although we are very disappointed by the loss of Nature Center, this news does not stop us from continuing our nature-based education and outreach programming. Our after-school programs and summer camps are still happening, along with many other activities!

For the past few years, we have been gradually building our presence in the community by establishing partnerships with area schools, JeffCo Outdoor Labs, Evergreen Library, Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT), EPRD, Denver Mountain Parks, JeffCo OpenSpace, Evergreen Sustainability Alliance, Wild Aware, Georgetown Discovery Center, and many more. We will continue these efforts as we start planning for a future without the use of the warming hut. We can still make a huge impact in the community to foster contagious enthusiasm and life-long respect for the natural world.

We are very fortunate to have Emma Vasicek as our Executive Director. With her expertise and energy, we will continue our excellent program offerings and find new ways to bring the Evergreen Nature Center to the community. Stay tuned for how you can help us with these efforts.

The Evergreen Nature Center will always have a special place in our hearts. Please send me your favorite Nature Center memories or photos and we’ll get them on the website to celebrate the amazing 14 years we’ve had in the warming hut.
