Presentation Details
As our weather changes, our days become shorter, and fall approaches, changes in animal behavior are evident. For example, our spring/summer resident birds begin to migrate and our fledged resident birds establish their own territories. Less evident is how our human behaviors and policies affect bird populations.
At our Thursday, September 7, 2023 Evergreen Audubon Chapter Meeting our speaker will discuss land use policy in the Denver metro area and how it has influenced the population distributions of urban raptors. Ally Davidge, a researcher in the Department of Integrative Biology, University of Colorado, Denver, will present, “Impacts of Historic Redlining Policy on Wildlife Habitat and Cooper’s Hawk Occupancy.”
The doors will open (and the Zoom link will be live) at 6:45 pm (NOTE: This is 15 minutes later than has been our custom! ) at Evergreen Church of the Transfiguration. The program will start around 7:15 pm with a brief business meeting where we’ll fill you in on all the new and exciting things happening with Evergreen Audubon and the Evergreen Nature Center. The program will begin after these brief announcements.
Ally poses an important and challenging question: Does racism affect wildlife? Using her research on Cooper’s Hawks and redlining and land use in the 1930s Denver and up to the present day, Ally will discuss her conclusion on how land use decisions may play a role in the bird’s decisions.
This is presentation provides insight into how land use practices can have significant effects on bird populations, and how we as a society can harmonize equitable land use policy with wildlife.
This is a meeting you won’t want to miss.
About the Speaker
Ally Davidge is completing the final semester of their master’s degree, and is a directorate fellow with the USFWS. She is co-advised by Dr. Laurel Hartley, Dr. Brian Millsap and Dr. Mike Wunder in the Integrative Biology Department at the University of Colorado, Denver. Prior to coming back to school, Ally was a Condor Biologist at the Peregrine Fund,
managing the California condor population at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. She also spent several seasons as a technician banding terns and plovers for San Diego Zoo’s Conservation Research Institute, conserving spotted owl populations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and monitoring migratory birds for HawkWatch International and Cape May Raptor Banding Project in Washington, New Mexico, and New Jersey. Their focus is on smarter policy decisions for the future of conservation and biodiversity. After completing their master’s degree, Ally hopes to work for the USFWS, USGS, or the state of Colorado as a wildlife biologist.
