Topic: Birds on the Move: Tracking nocturnal migration using radar remote sensing

Date and Time: Thursday, September 1st at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm for socializing)
Location: Hybrid: In person at Evergreen Christian Church and virtual attendance via Zoom

Presentation Details

As fall encroaches on our Evergreen world, migration becomes a focus of birders. We think of skeins of geese and cranes moving southward during the day, but recent research has expanded our understanding of migration as a 24/7 phenomenon, with substantialA man looking at the sky with a spotting scope with a laptop open in front of Him numbers of fall migrants moving during the night. Using radar and other remote sensing tools, ornithologists are discovering the extent and magnitude of nocturnal migration, and the effects of human activities, such as leaving the lights on all night in buildings, especially skyscrapers.

Our Thursday, September 1, 2022, Evergreen Audubon chapter meeting will provide a unique opportunity to learn about emerging research in nocturnal migration from a leader in this topic, Professor Kyle Horton, Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, Colorado State University, and director of the CSU Aeroecology Lab. Professor Horton will present his team’s findings on nocturnal migration across the North American continent.

Be sure to arrive early to grab a good seat (virtual or actual) and to visit with your Evergreen Audubon friends and neighbors.  If you are coming in person, our meeting will be held at Evergreen Christian Church, 27772 Iris Drive, Evergreen, CO 80439. If attending virtually, consult the Zoom link information below. The meeting begins at 7 pm with brief announcements to catch you up on Evergreen Audubon’s jam-packed calendar of events and outings, immediately followed by the evening’s program.

About the Speaker

Kyle Horton received his B.S. in Biology from Canisius College in 2011. He completed his M.S. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in 2013 with Jeffrey Buler, and his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Oklahoma in 2017 with

Jeffrey Kelly. Kyle was a Rose Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology from 2017-2019 and is now an assistant professor at Colorado State University in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. His Aeroecology lab focuses on understanding the movement of migratory birds through the lower atmosphere across continental scales using remote sensing tools, like weather surveillance radar.
