Chatfield State Park surrounds the large reservoir built at the confluences of the South Platte River, Deer Creek, and Plum Creek.  The lake can be very good for winter waterfowl, while the extensive cottonwood gallery forests can provide a nice mix of landbirds.  In addition, portions of the park have shortgrass prairie.  The diversity of habitats results in the park having the greatest bird species diversity of any other location in the southwest metro area.

Getting out and looking for winter raptors is not just something we do to pass the time until Spring migration comes along.  It is an activity to be anticipated and relished!  We’ll be cruising some dirt roads south of Barr Lake and checking out the prairie dog towns for winter raptors. Birding will be primarily from the side of the road without much walking.
