All ages welcome! Join Ed Furlong and other Evergreen Audubon members for a very special Bird Walk on Friday, May 9, 2025 from 6:45 am to 11:00 am when we visit the seasonal bird banding station operated by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies at Denver Audubon’s Nature Center at Chatfield. This is a fantastic opportunity to see birds up close as Bird Conservancy Staff capture, band, and release migrating and local songbirds as part of their long-term monitoring to understand bird populations and trends.

Our start time, selected as the best time to see many birds, will give us a few minutes to meet and get ready, prior to visiting the banding station. We will then take a short walk and be at the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies bird-banding station promptly at 7 am. There we will have the opportunity to see several species of birds in-the-hand and learn about their migratory behavior. Following our time at the Banding Station, we will spend time birding along the South Platte adjacent to Denver Audubon’s Kingery Nature Center, part of Chatfield State Park.

Bring water and a snack, and plan to meet at the Denver Audubon Nature Center no later than 6:45 am (details provided to registrants). Historically, it has not been necessary to have a Colorado State Parks pass for parking at the Denver Audubon Nature Center, however there will be a charge of $7 per person for visiting the banding station when you register below.  Please note that this charge goes directly to Rocky Mountain Bird Conservancy and Denver Audubon; Evergreen Audubon does not receive any money from this charge.

Please note: Registration is opening early for this event. Denver Audubon schedules these banding station visits and limits group visits to weekdays, and to specific time slots. Banding station visits are very popular and fill rapidly. We are limited to 14 total spaces for our members. We want to fill those spaces so as many members as possible can enjoy this incredible experience. Note that this visitor limit during banding is imposed by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for the health and safety of the birds.

If you are unable to attend our scheduled group visit on Friday and would like to visit the banding station with your family or friends, we suggest you go directly to Denver Audubon’s website and register with them directly for weekend openings. Denver Audubon’s event calendar for weekend bird banding station visits opens on March 10, 2025, and available dates run from April 26 to May 31.

These walks are for Evergreen Audubon members and their guests. Non-members won’t be turned away but will be encouraged to join Evergreen Audubon. You must register and pay here to attend this event. If you are registering for more than one person, please enter each person separately. This event is filled when we have 14 registrants. A waitlist will be generated after we reach our limit; we often have last-minute cancellations, so if you are interested in attending and the limit has been reached please be sure to register and get on that waitlist.

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you out there birding!
