Expired April 2022 Chapter Meeting

There are no upcoming dates for this event.

Topic: Exploring Birds of the World, the world’s most comprehensive platform of bird life histories
Speaker: Laura Kammermeier, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology
Date and Time: Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm for socializing)
Location: Hybrid: In person at Evergreen Christian Church and virtual attendance via Zoom

As we enter April in our Evergreen World, the signs of returning migrants are increasingly abundant. Despite the potential for snow, the Song Sparrow is greeting the morning, the sky-blue flash of Mountain Bluebirds against Ponderosa Pines arrests our attention, and we know that a panoply of summer residents are joining the resident bird community to court, nest, raise and fledge young. Truly a joyous spring gift!

Behind those moments of delight are myriad behaviors that we may not be aware of.  Our field guides will give us some clues to the great mysteries within bird lives, but there is so much to explore and learn, and new information accumulates each day. Where do we go for trustworthy authoritative information about the lives of the birds that mean so much to us?

The right online resources are deep and detailed, offering text, photographic, audio, and video information that will rapidly grow our knowledge and appreciation of the avian lives around us, near and far.

One of the most authoritative sources of bird information is the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and Birds of the World is the one location online that makes decades of research and knowledge easily accessible.

On Thursday, April 7, 2022, Evergreen Audubon members and friends will have the chance to learn all about Birds of the World when we host Laura Kammermeier of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in a virtual presentation.

Birds of the World is the world’s leading scholarly, dynamic, avian life history platform. Our speaker, Laura Kammermeier, will highlight the information contained in this resource. In short, it can help deepen our understanding of birds, learn more about bird families and subspecies, examine songs, calls and identification features, and find updated range maps. Laura will give us a tour of the website and will discuss how it fits into the Cornell Lab’s larger mission to “bend the curve” for birds.

Laura Kammermeier has a Master’s degree in ecology and 25 years of experience in citizen science, digital marketing, and communications. She has coordinated citizen science programs such as Florida LakeWatch and Project FeederWatch, built a business offering digital marketing services to environmental nonprofits, traveled the world as a birding travel writer, and started a popular nature travel blog.  At the Lab, she manages marketing and communications for Birds of the World full-time. She spends her free time at home watching birds and “rewilding” her property for birds and other wildlife.
