Do you love bluebirds? If so, you will love this new citizen science project offered by Evergreen Audubon. It involves adopting a cluster of bird nestboxes in either Elk Meadow or Three Sisters Open Space Parks and looking into your boxes every 2 weeks during breeding season from May 1 to July 15 starting in 2023. Record what you see and report the results to our bird box monitor.
There are four clusters of five to ten nestboxes each in Elk Meadow and two clusters in Three Sisters. All clusters are placed to be easy to get to and not far from a trail. Each trip should take about 20 to 40 minutes to walk to the boxes and open each one up and record your findings. Evergreen Audubon will provide guidance on how to record results and keep the boxes in good shape.
This is a perfect activity for families or any birding enthusiast. These boxes typically attract Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Mountain Chickadees, Tree, and Violet Green Swallows, Pigmy and White Breasted Nuthatches, and House Wrens. Most of the boxes are used every year.
An experienced nestbox monitor will show you around your cluster, how to open the boxes and how to fill out the data sheets. Written instructions are included for the data sheets.
We are requiring nestbox monitors to be members of Evergreen Audubon due to Jefferson County permit requirements. Yearly membership dues are $25.00 for an individual and $40.00 for family memberships. Go to https://evergreenaudubon.org/get-involved/membership/ to become a member.
