Initially, weather for the 2024 Christmas Bird Count was a bit nippy with morning temps for the Elk Management Area and Mestaa’ehehe Pass in the upper teens, but by early afternoon temps throughout the count circle were in the low 40s.

Each year as part of Evergreen Audubon’s annual January banquet we announce the Bear Creek Watershed Bird-of-the-Year and honor those folks who have successfully completed our annual Birding Challenge.

When I picked South Platte Park as potentially a good mid-October destination, I was thinking we would be in the midst of Indian Summer – warm days and chilly nights, but that didn’t quite happen this year as we ended up with hot days and mild nights.  

For the most part the Snowy Egrets along with many shorebirds, hummingbirds, flycatchers, and other passerines have already pulled up stakes.  Nonetheless, we scored over forty species, and we were never short of good entertainment.

Let’s not beat around the bush!   We recorded fifty species on our Wednesday outing, which is outstanding! And, I think the big highlight of the day has to have been the twenty or so times we noted some degree of parental care for nestlings and fledglings.
