Whether you are a carpool driver or will be meeting us at Barr Lake, you will need to have a Colorado State Park daily pass ($10/vehicle), a Keep Colorado Wild Pass, or have a separate Colorado State Park annual pass.

Barr Lake State Park, Adams County, Colorado is one of the Front Range’s premier birding locations.  Many birders come to Barr Lake State Park specifically for the waterfowl and shorebirds that are attracted to the 1,900-acre reservoir, but the extensive cottonwood galleries and substantial grasslands attract many other species not specifically associated with lakes and riparian habitats. These diverse ecosystems are one of the reasons that 353 bird species have been recorded at the park, making it a compelling birding destination at almost any time of the year.

Late March along the Front Range requires birders have a gambler’s confidence. We can have warm sunny spring days or cold wet snowstorms, often within 24 hours of each other! But we can hedge our bets a bit at Barr Lake State Park, which has been documented to shelter overwintering waterfowl, northbound avian migrants, and its many year-round residents, all at this tricky time of the birding year.

Upon arrival, we will walk along Barr Lake’s eastern/southeastern shore on paved and unpaved trails. We will visit the Nature Observation Station, the Gazebo (known as a great place to observe Bald Eagles and their nests, and if time permits, the Rookery Gazebo. This walk provides great opportunities for observing birds in grassland, woodlands and lakeshore habitats.

These walks are for Evergreen Audubon members and their guests. Non-members won’t be turned away but will be encouraged to join Evergreen Audubon. You must register here to attend this event. If you are registering for more than one person, please enter each person separately. This event is filled when we have 12 registrants. If you attempt to register and the event is full, please be sure to put yourself on the waitlist. If we have any cancellations, waitlisted registrants will be contacted in the order registered to see if they wish to attend. Please email me at ed.furlong@evergreenaudubon.org, if you have other questions.

Thanks, and I hope to see you out birding!
