Evergreen Audubon is proud to be establishing our first-ever Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) Committee. This committee will gather data, set measurable goals, and guide the overall trajectory of EDIA work throughout the organization. So, what is EDIA and why does it matter?

Equity is “the fair and just distribution of resources and opportunities in consideration of the different needs and experiences of people to ensure that everyone has an equal chance to succeed.”

Diversity is “the variety of human experiences, perspectives, and identities. Diversity can be based on factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, and socioeconomic status.”

Inclusion is “the act of welcoming and accepting people from all backgrounds and experiences. Inclusion is about creating a safe space where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.”

Accessibility is “the practice of ensuring that all people have equal access to opportunities and resources regardless of their abilities or disabilities; this requires removing physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from accessing and participating.

Each of these principles is vital to the continued and future success of our organization. National Audubon has highlighted these initiatives in their 2023-2028 Strategic Plan. A particularly impactful quote from National Audubon states the following:

“We are better together. Protecting and conserving nature and the environment transcends political, cultural, and social boundaries. Respect, inclusion, and opportunity for people of all backgrounds, lifestyles, and perspectives will attract the best ideas and harness the greatest passion to shape a healthier, more vibrant future for all of us who share our planet.”

Nature and access to environmental education are for everyone, and I am looking forward to actively strengthening Evergreen Audubon & Nature Center by prioritizing EDIA.
