All ages and abilities welcome!  Join Chuck Aid for our all-day outing to Prewitt Reservoir on September 5, from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

About 50% of the world’s shorebird species are in decline, and essential habitat is being lost at an alarming rate. This year September 6 has been designated as World Shorebirds Day.  For a week on either side of that date people all over the world will be conducting shorebird surveys as professionals and as public participants to gather data that can help in guiding shorebird conservation and research.  For more information go to https://www.worldshorebirdsday.org.  This date tends to coincide roughly with the peak of shorebird migration here in Colorado, and we will be getting out to see what we can find at a couple of northeast Colorado’s better-know shorebird sites, making a small contribution to what is known about shorebird migration in Colorado.  Our primary focus will be Prewitt Reservoir in Washington County with possibly additional visits to a few playas in Morgan County.  Depending on the flow of the day we may also visit Jackson Reservoir.

Important Info:  Prewitt is one of the few State Wildlife Areas that charges an entrance fee.  It’s about $28/person/day.  For info go to https://cpw.state.co.us/swa/Prewitt%20Reservoir%20SWA.  The easiest way to get around all the red tape is to simply go to Walmart or Big R and buy a hunting or fishing license or a State Wildlife Area pass for much less money.  For this last option you can also buy one on-line at https://www.cpwshop.com/purchaseprivilege.page?_PageParam.displayCategoryID=251527462

By necessity this will be a full day, but a rewarding one.  Bring water, a snack, lunch, more snacks, and insect repellent; and be prepared for mud and possibly the need for two pairs of footwear (extra trash bag for muddy stuff); and meet at the Bergen Park-and-Ride at 6:00 AM.  Further details will be provided to registrants.

The day will be spent driving to a variety of locations where we will scan for shorebirds.  In addition, we may luck into some good migrant songbirds.  If you have a spotting scope definitely bring it along.  Depending on the water level of the reservoirs there may or may not be a lot of walking. Restrooms will be sparse, but we’ll find some.

These walks are for Evergreen Audubon members and their guests. Non-members won’t be turned away but will be encouraged to join Evergreen Audubon.  You must register here to attend this event.  If you are registering for more than one person, please enter each person separately.  This event is filled when we have 12 registrants, but it is possible to put yourself on the waitlist and cancellations do occur with some regularity.

Thanks!

Chuck Aid
